Dopo aver evidenziato le differenze con le coeve opere di Brunelleschi -sottolineando che quelle ghibertiane si permettono di essere solo immaginarie-, lo studio prosegue con la lettura del trattato di Alberti, che pur rivelando molte corrispondenze, fu pubblicato oltre un decennio dopo la fusione delle formelle. Lo studioso crede che uno scambio di idee tra Ghiberti e Alberti sia certamente avvenuto e, non potendo sapere chi dei due influenzò maggiormente l’altro, ritiene che la ricerca dei due umanisti muovesse già verso proposte simili.</text>

In particolare cerca di ipotizzare sia avvenuta l’influenza fiorentina su Nicola da Guardiagrele, uno dei maggiori orafi abruzzesi, sia nel caso che abbia brevemente sostato a Firenze, proprio nel periodo di completamento della prima porta di Ghiberti per il Battistero, sia nel caso avesse avuto a disposizione  i calchi di alcune formelle già terminate, che sarebbero stati successivamente impiegati per le formelle del paliotto di San Berardo a Teramo (opera autografa di Nicola) e per i rilievi di Castel di Sangro (il cui auspicabile restauro potrebbe confermare l’attribuzione allo stesso Nicola) e per le numerose croci.</text>
