Studio sulla tecnica di fusione dei rilievi della Porta del Paradiso

An insight on Ghiberti’s casting techniques for the Gates of Paradise panels. It was reviewed how the wax models were prepared (first was the “lavorazione a sciacquo” [rinse], pouring the wax with a temperature of 60°C in the mold; then the edges were bolstered up and in the end there was a coat of wax apllied by hand or with a brush). The unusual apparatus of convoy channels may have been chosen to achieve thinness on wide surfaces, and less air bubbles in the bronze. A couple of experiments on the actual method used to pour the bronze have been successful, proving it feasible.
