Description
The article focuses on eight works of art made by Ghiberti (St. John the Baptist and St. Matthew statues at Orsanmichele), Donatello and Michelozzo, analyzing the proportions and ratios within their structure and in relation to the context. Thus, it is proved that in just twenty years the artists went from traditional systems of design to more mathematical and modular systems of proportions. Ghiberti went from the typical geometrical outline usually used by stonemasons -that can also be seen in Donatello’s St. Louis - to employ a mathematical, pytagorean-platonic series based on the Greek musical scale. In the appendix, the eight diagrams of the different proportion used.
