Le Statue di Or San Michele. III

Title

Le Statue di Or San Michele. III

Description

Ghiberti’s three statues at Orsanmichele church are compared to each other by their increasing degree of adherence to the sculpture style characteristic of Renaissance sculpture, and comparing them with Donatello’s contemporary works. Therefore, St. John statue is belittled for its gothic style, St. Matthew statue for its strict conformity to classical elements, while St. Stephen statue is the only with a good degree of modernity. On the other hand, the alcoves’ decoration may be considered the most innovative work of Ghiberti’s contribution to Orsanmichele.
