Ghiberti and master Gusmin

The article analyses Master Gusmin, the only non Italian artist Ghiberti writes about in his Commentary. There are no known works of art by Gusmin and the information about him are scarce. Krautheimer hypothesizes that Gusmin may be one of the German goldsmithers at the service of French courts in the late 14th century, probably Louis I Duke of Anjou’s court. Comparing the panels from Ghiberti’s first door for the Baptistery and the German goldsmithers’ production, the author suggests that Ghiberti may have known their works, admired them, but not taken them as an example.
