Three Renaissance drawings of church façades

Title

Three Renaissance drawings of church façades

Description

The article focuses on four drawings of church façades in Buonaccorso Ghiberti’s Zibaldone; only one is easily recognized as San Miniato al Monte. Through a comparison with exisiting Renaissance architectures and those depicted in contemporary works of painting and sculpture it is suggested that the drawings should be dated around 1450s, or at least in the second half of Quattrocento. For the three remaining drawings, some elements -mainly the proportions between the architectonical elements- correspond to those used in the representation of architectures in the Gates of Paradise panels, so that the drawings may derive from some sketches done in Lorenzo Ghiberti’s workshop. It is thus suggested that the third façade could be a project for SS. Stefano and Vincenzo Ferrer church, established in Florence in 1474.
