Lorenzo Monaco, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Orsanmichele: part I-II

Title

Lorenzo Monaco, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Orsanmichele: part I-II

Description

The authoress retraces, through previously unknown records, the commission and production of stained glass windows and portals at Orsanmichele church, focusing mainly on dating the various components and on the artists who created them. Thus, examining some payments to Ghiberti, it is provedconfirmed that the project for the western portals was done by him e, as Marchini had already suggested. Ghiberti may have also drawn the windows made by Bernardo di Francesco, the same glassmaker who worked for him at the Cathedral. The article demonstrates that for many years Ghiberti, even if he was not on the payroll of the Orsanmichele confraternity, still recieved many gifts from them; it is then suggested that that was his reward as an advisor. In the appendix, all the records are transcribed.
