Tuscan sculptors: their lives, works, and times, with illustrations from original drawings and photographs

Title

Tuscan sculptors: their lives, works, and times, with illustrations from original drawings and photographs

Description

The author writes about Lorenzo Ghiberti’s life and artistic career stressing the pictorial quality of his works, to the point that he believes that Ghiberti should be regarded as a goldsmith and a painter rather than as a sculptor. As a consequence, the author does not analyse Ghiberti’s statues for Orsanmichele church as much as the doors for the Florentine Baptistery or the panels for the baptismal font in Siena. And in these masterpieces he highlights the quality of the perspective and the variety and number of the represented people.
