Title

Ricerche sopra alcuni capolavori d'arte fiorentina, edizione italiana a cura di Francesco Malaguzzi Valeri

Description

An entire chapter of the volume is about the Gates of Paradise, with an historical and stylistc analysis. The author starts with Leonardo Bruni’s first concept for the door, with 28 panels, and gets to the final 10 panels structure through the intermediate project in 24 panels; highlighting that bigger panels made the perspective method choosen by Ghiberti easier. He focuses then on the panel with the story of Salomon and the Queen of Saba, recognising in the temple the representation of Ghiberti’s idea for the completion of Florence Cathedral (a topic that he studies in the appendix). After pointing out those artistic qualities and choices of Ghiberti that made the Gates of Paradise a real masterpiece, he suggests some artists that may have been influenced by it, such as the Della Robbias, Benedetto da Maiano, Michelangelo and Raffaello. All the known records about the Gates of Paradise are transcribed in the appendix.
