Notizie de' professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua. Tomo 3

Title

Notizie de' professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua. Tomo 3

Description

This chapter recounts Ghiberti’s life and greatest achievements, using historical records to correct some information that can usually be found in earlier biographies -such as Vasari’s one. First of all, the author retraces Ghiberti’s family history: even if the author is not certain that Lorenzo was of the same branch as the family that managed to nominate a few Priori [the public officers in charge of ruling the Florentine republic] during the 13th and 14th centuries, some of Vittorio’s -Lorenzo’s son- properites had been owned before by that family. Therefore, the author suggests that Lorenzo was Cione Ghiberti’s son, while the goldsmith Bartoluccio was his putative father. It is also suggested that Gherardo Starnina had been his drawing teacher. At the end of the chapter the author catalogues Ghiberti’s works, referencing autographed papers kept by Cristofano Berardi. The author also reports the Arte del Cambio’s journal for St. Matthew statue at Orsanmichele church, the Opera del Duomo’s commision for the stained glass windows’ design, a few leases about houses used as laboratory during the working for the Baptistery doors, Ghiberti’s journal for the farm at Settimo (Florence) and Ghiberti’s family tree.
