Lorenzo Ghiberti and the frame of Gentile da Fabriano's "Adoration of the Magi"

Building on Marchini’s and Zervas’ studies on Ghiberti’s architectural design, the author compares Santa Maria del Fiore’s oculi, the western portals and the Arte di Calimala alcove at Orsanmichele to suggest that even the frame for Gentile da Fabriano’s “Adoration of Magi” should be reported as such. Indeed, Palla Strozzi, who commissioned the painting to Gentile, was at that time also the overseer for the Arte di Calimala at Orsanmichele.
