Calchi in stucco del primo Rinascimento: quattro Madonne della Fondazione Giorgio Cini
Creator
Description
Studying four Madonna with Child preserved in Venice, the author reviews/ retraces their various attributions, highlighting the discrepancies in Bode’s and Krautheimer’s theory (claiming that the common prototype was made by Ghiberti) as well as in Bellosi’s one (claiming that the prototype was made by Brunelleschi). Focusing on the four busts owned by the Fondazioni Cini, the author points out that this specific composition -certainly initiated in the early Quattrocento Florence- had a wider circulation and a larger mass production than what had been known until then. He adds that conversely there should have been a large amount of fakes made in the 19th-20th centuries and released on the antiques market.
