After revising the technical procedure behind the production of Ghiberti’s Saint Matthew, the author compares them with those characteristic of the Roman period, finding no relation between the two and thus being able to reason that) the ancient casting tradition was long forgotten and that Renaissance sculptors provided different solutions to similar problems. Specifically, Renaissance bronze sculptures are thicker and the thickness prevents the wielding; therefore it was usually prefered a single casting to the assembly of many parts, that was the solution adopted by Greeks and Romans for their bronze statuary.
