Fantasy architecture of Roma Antica

Title

Fantasy architecture of Roma Antica

Description

The article illustrates a few late Quattrocento albums concerning classical buildings in Rome; one of these album is Buonaccorso Ghiberti’s Zibaldone. After a comparison between the albums and between them and the architecture representation in contemporary paintings, coins and medals, the author suggests that a common prototype for the albums may have originated from the Lombard-Venetian courts. Buonaccorso’s drawings are therefore copies of sketches owned by his father Vittorio, who carried on Lorenzo’s antiquary interests.
