Michelozzo di Bartolomeo
Title
Michelozzo di Bartolomeo
Description
Michelozzo was a coiner for the Florentine mint since he was a young boy and became the favourite architect of the Medici family; but he also worked at various times with Ghiberti, as his employee or in more relevant roles.
He was part of the workshop working for the north doors of the Baptistery, probably from the late '10s of the century. In 1419 he was an assistant to the challenging cast of the bronze statue of St. Matthew at Orsanmichele. He worked at the Strozzi Chapel, the artistic direction of which is thought to be ascribed to Ghiberti himself by some scholars. He also took part to the works for the Gates of Paradise several times: for just a few months in 1425; in a relevant role -as the pay suggests- from 1437 to 1442; in a less important position since 1448.
His works on the Gates of Paradise litteraly left a mark: the florin stamps concealed in the bronze frame.
