Ghiberti Architetto

Title

Ghiberti Architetto

Description

The author studies Ghiberti’s architectural quest, focusing on the Gates of Paradise panels with the histories of Isaac, Joseph and the Queen of Sheba and St. Zenobius’ shrine. After highlighting the difference between Ghiberti’s and Brunelleschi’s architectures -stressing that Ghiberti’s one are always imaginary-, the article focuses on Alberti’s treatise, emphasizing many common points, even if the treatise was published more than a decade after the panels were cast. Krautheimer believes Ghiberti and Alberti did exchange point of view on the matter and, not knowink who had the biggest influence on the other, he presumes that their architectural vocabularies were already similar.
