The article in two parts studies the terracotta Madonna with Child preserved at the Museum of Budapest and commonly attributed to Ghiberti or his atelier. The analysis focuses on a few details (the drapery, the Virgin’s face, the proportion, the relationship between the figures) trying to figure out when and by who the statue was made. The author believes that the terracotta was probably sculpted between 1425 and 1430, even if it shows elements typical of the previous decade, so it was probably done after a model. He prefers not to attribute the work of art, but he highlights the fact that many stylistic details are typical of Jacopo della Quercia’s atelier, rather than Ghiberti’s one.
