Terra cotta Madonnas

Title

Terra cotta Madonnas

Description

After comparing the conventional Madonna relief attributed to Ghiberti’s studio and the Caritas made by Bartolommeo Buon in 1427 for one of the capitals at the Ca d’oro in Venice, the author claims they share the same prototype, a Ghiberti’s relief made between 1416 and 1427. However the reliefs with the Child standing shouldn’t be ascribed to Ghiberti’s studio, as Bode suggested, but to a studio in Siena, maybe Jacopo della Quercia’s one or someone’s close to him. In both cases the reliefs, with the Child standing or sitting and displaying the Madonna’s maternal love, may come from a common model already known in Tuscany and probably originated from Byzantine culture.
