Description

For the first time it’s attempted an analysis of the evolution of Ghiberti’s style between the panel for the contest in 1401 and the panels of the first door for the Baptistery. This is achieved by sorting the panels into three groups after a comparison of their style , relating them to three different phases of work (1403-1407, 1407-1415, 1415-1424, taken from the records) and comparing them to contemporary works of art influenced by Ghiberti’s production. Moreover, one of the panels for the baptismal font at Siena designed by Ghiberti is ascribed to Giuliano di Ser Andrea and the cross at Santa Maria all’Impruneta is dated between 1415 and 1420 and ascribed, at least in the design, to Ghiberti. Lastly, is reported some biographic information taken from Ghiberti’s journal (1441) owned by Hoepli and Olschki.
