After the discovery of a few punchings related to the fiorino design on the right half of the Gates of Paradise, the story behind the competition between Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, Bernardo Cennini, and Lorenzo Ghiberti for the appointment to the Florentine mint as coiner was reconstructed. Through the identification of the coat-of-arms of the Signori e Ufficiali della Zecca (the mint officiers), which changed every six months, it was possible not only to date the competition, but also the making of the frame for the Gates of Paradise.
