Description
The author focuses on the goldsmithing production variously linked to Lorenzo Ghiberti. It is suggested that the first Ghiberti’s experience in casting human-size bronze statues might happened while in Pesaro. His apprenticeship as a goldsmith took place in Bartolo di Michele’s atelier; in this volume a few enamels on St. James’ Altar in the cathedral of Pistoia and three ecclesiastic seals are attribuited for the first time to Bartolo. Regarding Ghiberti’s attribuited goldsmithing works, the writer suggests to rule out the box reliquary preserved at the MET. On the other hand, the St. James’ Reliquiary it’s long been considered Ghiberti’s work of art, or at least coming from his atelier; produced for the Pistoia Cathedral -San Zeno church- in 1407. It’s also suggested that due to work exclusivity demanded to Ghiberti for the Baptistery doors, Ghiberti’s goldsmithing works were created on his behalf and starting from his designs by a group of trusted goldsmiths – the few most likely are here listed . Consequently, St. Blaise’s reliquiary, preserved in Prato, and Bishop Salutati’s miter are for the first time ascribed to Ghiberti’s studio.
